2008 WGI Percussion World Champion: Rhythm X!!!
message posted: 20-04-2008 11:36
Independent World
With a program that pushed the boundaries for visual creativity in the activity that earned caption awards for Effect and Visual, Rhythm X (OH) (Gold Medal- 96.9) took their first WGI PIW Championship with “Gone”. With a reddish-orange autumn leaf camouflage pattern on tarp, backdrops, and costumes, the line almost disappeared from view when their backs were to the audience, making them literally appear to be “gone”.
Riverside Community College (CA) (Silver Medal- 95.8) took the spectators on a journey to 1920’s-era Paris as seen through the eyes of an American traveler with “City of Lights”. Aimachi (Japan) (Bronze Medal- 94.85), always a fan favorite, once again won our hearts with “Drum Roll”. The line brought along their IW medalist guard, who in addition to flags, rifles, sabers, and batons, also utilized snare drums as equipment, tossing them high up in the air.
IPE Guests Matrix (OH) (9th- 89.7) began their program “Beats” with the most fundamental pulse of all- the human heartbeat. A big booming introduction certainly got heart rates raised as the music book took the ensemble through a number of varied styles. Some of the finest musical moments of the evening occurred during sensitively played rubato passages in a gorgeous softer section where a discernible beat was absent.

Taking us from an ancient Roman coliseum to modern day urban America, Dartmouth (MA) (Gold Medal- 96.75) captured the PSW title on the strength of high Effect and Visual scores with “Mightier Than The Sword”. Starting with the battery as combatants in the arena, the line continued their tradition of solid drumming with demanding parts from all sections which were executed with ease.
Demonstrating the ultimate futility of violence and war, defending PSW Champion Mission Viejo (CA) (Silver Medal- 95.75) presented “Walking In Your Footsteps”. In the beginning we heard ethereal angelic sounds as though one were present at the dawn of creation. However, the mood quickly darkened into an avalanche of aggression and rage as mankind came in conflict with itself, with drums pounding out angry outbursts when the tempo quickened.
Claremont (CA) (Bronze Medal- 94.7), moving up two places from prelims, treated us to an all-night drumming bash with “From Dusk til Dawn”. Starting with the setting of the sun, the line treated the UD Arena crowd to a spectacular percussive serenade.
IPE Guests Father Ryan (TN) (14th- 87.0) continued their tradition as clown princes of WGI with the uproarious “Seven Countries in Seven Minutes”. A hapless American tourist boarded a plane and had a series of misadventures in foreign lands. After being pounced on by a large sumo wrestler in Japan to being chased by a bull in Spain, the man was happy to finally touch the ground in the US of A, as he was greeted by this year’s Presidential candidates and the Pope.

The audience loved the performances, including Swiss Superdrumline Top Secret, 15 competing units and the Amplification Clinic by Rob Ferguson (in front of a full house!). It was GREAT!
For the first time in history, two WGI Indoor Percussion Ensembles were performing at one event! Father Ryan High School Winter Drumline showed the audience what a young (max. 17 years old) and talented group can do! With Japanese sumo wrestlers, Irish Leprechauns, African tribals, bicycles and a Spanish (bull)fighter they got the crowed on their feet! (Twice!). Indoor Percussion Ensemble Matrix is from another planet. With their energy, their pace, their technique and their "Beats", they blew the audience away with top notch performances!
IPE would like to thank:
All competing units
All volunteers
Top Secret, Matrix and Father Ryan HS
Our Sponsors: Dynasty, InCorps, Muremo and Corps & Band
Our Judges
Our Photographers (Fotoroma and Drumcorpsmedia.com)
The Audience for making this percussion event really special!

The IPE Championships are going to be a mega percussion event! 515 tickets are allready sold and no less than 16 units from 6 different countries will perform on Sunday March 30th in Wevelgem, Belgium.
Besides the Championships IPE is proud to present a very unique amplification clinic. Dynasty USA Educational Endorser Rob Ferguson (The Glassmen/Matrix) will be doing this clinic entitled "Amplifying the Front Ensemble: How to and How Much?".
Rob will be focusing on the growing situation of amplification. Indoor drumlines, Marching Bands, and Drum corps are using amplification to boost their front ensemble sound. This presents many problems for the educator and Rob will help everyone figure out what would be best for all situations. Rob will also be going through the new Dynasty USA amplification equipment which includes powered PA speakers, Sub woofers, two different types of mixing boards, four microphones designed specifically for the activity, and special microphone clamps that make it easy to set up. The clinic will be held on Sunday March 30th.
Rob Ferguson has been the director of Matrix Indoor Drumline since its conception in 1999 and currently serves as the executive director, as well as the battery coordinator/arranger. Additionally, Ferguson is the front ensemble coordinator for the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps. He is currently serving his sixth term as a percussion representative to the Mid-East Performance Association Board of Directors.
The clinic is part of the IPE Championships and can only be entered with a IPE Championships ticket. (Presale ticket € 10,- and € 12,50 at the door) For the latest updates please visit our: IPE Championships Page

New date & location! IPE Championships on Sunday, March 30th in Wevelgem, Belgium!
message posted: 16-01-2008 22:02
Indoor Percussion Europe (IPE) has changed the date and location of the 2008 IPE Championships. The organisation has decided that the new date will be Sunday, March 30th, 2008 in “De Schelp” in Wevelgem, Belgium.
“Sunday March 30th will be better in every way”, Erwin van Gemert of IPE says. “Our main reason to change the date is because of the new arrival times of our American guests. With this new date we can really build an indoor percussion event which will be much better and bigger. Fans can already start looking forward to this super weekend because they don’t have two big events on one day anymore and IPE offers them a chance to experience the world’s best indoor percussion units in Belgium!”.
“Because of the changing of the date we also had to change to location. De Schelp in Wevelgem is a fantastic indoor facility which is perfect for showcasing the exhilarating performances of the world’s most elite and exclusive indoor percussion ensembles in Europe”.
