The Centerville High School Winter Drumline (Centerville, OH USA) will be traveling to Europe this Spring to compete in the 2010 Indoor Percussion Europe Championships in Crawley, England. The group will consist of approximately 50 High School students and the trip is coordinated to align with Spring Break from March 31-April 11, 2010. While rehearsing for and competing at the Championships, the group will also have the opportunity to visit the historic and educational cities of Brugges, Amsterdam, London and Paris, providing an experience of a lifetime for the students.
"With Centerville High School as our specials guests, we are certain that the European directors, designers and fans will experience what indoor percussion is all about!". says Erwin van Gemert of Indoor Percussion Europe. "Centerville High School will have a great experience here in Europe sight seeing and spreading good will throughout the indoor percussion community with clinics and shows in many different venues all over Europe and the UK. We are very excited and more than happy to welcome them at our European Championships in Crawley (UK)on April 4th!".
The Centerville Winter Drumline was selected as the ambassador for US Indoor Percussion based on their many years of success in Winter Guard International Percussion Championships.
‘We are extremely excited and honored to have been selected to participate in this International Percussion Competition. I know that our students will never forget this experience and our community is very proud that the Centerville Winter Drumline is an International Ambassador for the Arts.” says Tim Fairbanks, Marching Percussion Director. Centerville HS Winter Drumline would like to thank the following sponsors, whose continuing support of the group will help make this trip a reality: Dynasty, Innovative Percussion, Sabian Cymbals, Remo Drumheads, Muremo Music, FJM and the Centerville Band Boosters.
The news page on the IPE website welcomes a large group of visitors each day. You can reach all these people by submitting news from your indoor percussion unit or organisation to our editorial staff. You can send as much news as you want as long as it is related to indoor percussion.
For many years it has been the wish of our staff and members of the Jubal drumline to participate in the indoor percussion circuit during the winter months. After a great many talks, discussions, meetings, a lot of planning, writing and debating budgets this wish will now become reality. Jubal will have its own indoor percussion unit, carrying the clear and effective name of “Jubal Indoor Percussion”. This winter Jubal will enter several competitions of the CGN
circuits. The unit will perform the spectacular production of “Breathe”.
For several years Jubal’s drumline has been among the top of the Dutch and European units. It was time to extend the possibilities and capacities of the unit. “The winter months are primarily used for studying new exercises, which sometimes becomes monotonous or even boring. Studying a completely new show has created a fantastic challenge to spend the winter months in a very effective and useful way”, says staff coordinator Ramon Opmeer. Members get a lot of new experience and knowledge while studying an indoor percussion show, which will obviously benefit our summer programme as well. All members that will be marching in the 2010 corps, will also be involved in the indoor percussion circuit. Staff expects that thanks to the indoor percussion programme the overall quality of the corps’ drumline will get better and better. From all members kick in a few extra euros to make this project possible.
Jubal’s new captionhead percussion Ruben Lourens: “Normally our Jubal staff members always create and write our own shows, but this being a completely new phenomenon for the corps, we decided to find the expertise in America.” Together with American creative staff John Mapes and Ion Grom of the design team “Box Six” a programme was found carrying the title “Breathe”. The drill will be written by our own visual staff members Robin Bogert and Matt Thompson. The corps’ advantage is that Jubal has access to all its own necessary components: members, instructors, instruments and amplification. In the show “Breathe” we will; also be using electronic samples, a bass guitar and synthesizer. In the show “Breathe” everything is centred around the phenomenon “breathing”.
The percussion circuit is booming business. Every season many groups get together to participate in the circuit. We are talking about a competition in sportshalls where drumlines and front ensembles perform shows that include intense drill. The show that Jubal will study will be about seven minutes long. The shows will be judged by a qualified judging panel, similar to the drumcorps circuit. The indoor percussion circuit of CGN is linked to their successful and popular winterguard season. IPE (Indoor Percussion Europe) is an independent circuit which has seen an impressive growth over the last few years.
Both IPE and CGN circuits have been notified of Jubal’s scheduled participation. We will now select the shows we will sign up for. We will participate in a minimum of 3 competitions. Unfortunately the IPE Championships in England will not be an option, since these will be held the same weekend Jubal has its annual Easter camp with the full corps in Someren. Jubal sees participation in the indoor percussion circuit as a test, to see if this is something that fits the corps and asks for more. Members are very enthusiastic and are dying to get started. There are also thoughts of offering the Jubal Indoor Percussion to festival and tattoo committees during the summer months as an extra act.
A new milestone in the corps’99th year: Jubal Indoor Percussion!

The music of Percussion Unlimited’s newest production has been learned and as far as that goes, Nomophobia holds little secrets musically. But visually is a whole new story, with a new visual designer and captionhead, expansion of the visual staff and a bigger group the members of Percussion Unlimited are yet to be surprised.
October 10th saw the first visual rehearsal and the group worked hard on this season’s opener. Goal of the day was to complete the drill of the opener and that they achieved. During the next rehearsal on the 31st of October further work will be done on the opener to also incorporate the musical aspect of this movement. The front ensemble will be getting some extra attention by Peter Vulperhorst, himself a renowned concert percussionist and arranger for Pasveerkorpsen Leeuwarden.

2007 IPE Guests Rhythm X (OH) (Gold Medal- 97.263)
became the first group in over a decade to win consecutive PIW titles. “Touch” utilized almost every conceivable permutation of tactile contact, with various forms of touching, caressing, and leaning on each other for support. While the concept was effectively integrated visually, perhaps the precision and sensitivity with which the line played brought the show theme to another level, as mallet players showed great dynamic contrast within lightning-fast 16th note passages, and the battery sections played an intricate book with a clarity that had to be seen to be believed.
Riverside Community College (CA) (Silver Medal- 96.90)
explored the human need for icons with “Totem.” A large, black obelisk reminiscent of the one in “2001: A Space Odyssey” was a constant object of worship throughout the performance. The exotic music score combined with primitive, tribal choreography to produce an otherworldly spectacle that was simply mesmerizing to watch. The group formed crosses with cymbals and in the drill in a section recognizing the importance of religious symbols in our own culture before facing the obelisk in reverence at show’s end.
Coming to terms with mortality, Music City Mystique (TN) (Bronze Medal- 96.225)
performed their emotional powerhouse “Requiem.” Opening with the battery singing a dark “Dies Irae,” the show explored the process of accepting one’s coming death. As a man shouted “IT’S NOT FAIR!” after receiving bad news, the line played with a glass-cutting intensity. After dealing with feelings of loneliness in his grief, the man was able to accept his fate, calmly stating “I’m ready.” At the end, the inevitable happened, with the line stretching their arms as if on a cross.
Making the most from a simple concept, IPE guests North Coast Academy (MI) (7th- 91.413)
performed “Echo.” Members played echoes of short patterns using advanced dynamic shading. Visual reverberations were provided with individuals behind transparent screens, giving a ghost-image effect. One feature that had the spectators shouting for more was a stunning cymbal feature which had the players performing intricate rhythms and tossing the plates across the floor at each other.
Anyone who has ever felt the hurt of being shunned from a group can identify with 2008 IPE guests Matrix (OH) (10th- 89.563).
As a constant motif, during “Left Out” individuals were indeed ‘left out’ of section features and even blocked from entering the drill. A snare player spent the better part of the program trying to be accepted, eventually succeeding after performing an impressive solo.

Dartmouth (MA) (Gold Medal- 97.988)
accomplished the rare feat of back-to-back PSW titles. “The Garden” took us back to the beginning in Eden with an elaborate set full of thick, lush trees, including an imposing large tree with tempting forbidden fruit. At first, the Adam and Eve characters were in harmony with nature, but the fruit was too hard to resist. After tasting the apple, the plants (battery) became hostile, but unlike the Genesis account, in Dartmouth’s version the couple was allowed to stay in Paradise, dancing freely at the ending in a celebration of life.
Center Grove (IN) (Silver Medal- 95.638)
built “Say” around common adages that convey time-tested truths. Brief phrases such as “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” were stated throughout the program, with the music and visual design dramatizing the statement. One striking example was when the phrase “sometimes it’s better to say nothing at all” was spoken, followed by a sequence of silent drill. The tone turned more personal near the end, as the unit prompted us to express ourselves and “Say what you need to say”.
How much difference can one person make in a world full of chaos? Chino Hills (CA) (Bronze Medal- 95.375)
urged us to be positive forces of change with “Motivate.” The way the ensemble played their technically challenging book made us feel as though we could join them in accomplishing anything, as the crowd clapped along during a notable snare feature. The inspirational production ended with recorded clips of Martin Luther King, and of President Obama’s now-famous mantra, “Yes We Can!”
Former IPE guests results: Percussion Independent Open
Moving up from 4th place in Prelims, Father Ryan HS (2nd-91.400)

IPE's sole focus is on percussion, they are a new, young and ambitious organization, the Champions flags had to be a reflection of that.”
Indoor Percussion Europe is very happy with the new designs. The new flags will be presented to the winners of each class at the IPE European Championships in Roeselare on Sunday april 5th.

To stimulate the Indoor Percussion activities in Europe, IPE is inviting all Percussion caption heads of DCE (Open Class) corps to visit the IPE European Championships on Sunday april 5th in Roeselare, Belgium.
All percussion caption heads (selected by IPE) may visit the IPE European Championships for free by filling in a small survey about Indoor Percussion. “More and more “summer” drumlines are thinking of a better way to use the winter period”, says Erwin van Gemert of IPE. “In the past, drumlines were practicing the basics for months. We think that the growth and experience which can be developed by performing in a winter project can be much bigger. Combined with a European competition you’ll have a great start of your season!”.

Percussion Independent World Results
Music City Mystique (1st- 90.85)
won their second regional in the past month over a field that included five finalists from last season on the strength on High Effect and Performance scores. “Requiem” encapsulates the swirl of feelings one feels as death is imminent. The program has all the hallmarks fans have come to expect from this outstanding ensemble- tight musical precision, a state-of-the-art visual book, and a thought provoking show idea.
2008 PIW Champion Rhythm X (2nd- 90.325)
showed they are once again poised to make a title run with “Touch”. Continuing to be in the vanguard of visual design in the activity, the program utilized many varieties of physical contact to develop the touch concept. As is to be expected with a group of this caliber, the music book presents ample opportunities for the sections to shine, and the multiple features gave the audience plenty to cheer about.
Utilizing perhaps the most creative musical score of the day, IPE guests North Coast Academy (3rd- 87.75)
presented “Echo”. As a recurring motif throughout the show, sections would play patterns only to have them echoed back by other sections, sometimes with unusual voicings. The way the unit visually depicted echoes with mirroring and transparent screens brought the program up to another level, while also bringing down the house!
Have you ever felt like you’re not part of a group? Matrix (4th- 83.50)
understands. “Left Out” had, as a constant throughout the show, individuals within sections who were not included with the drill or who tried to join in on section features, only to arrive just as the feature was ending. Their fans needn’t worry, though. They will not be left out of performing in finals next month!
Gateway (5th- 83.15)
proved machines could not only drum, they could have fun too! The members were mechanized automatons in “Robot Rock”, initially moving with the stiffness associated with robots. However, once they got going, their hands and feet moved at the speed of sound, not letting up until their computer program shut down at the show’s conclusion.
With “Stick Figures”, Evolution (6th- 79.85)
took drawings a child would make and imagined what it would be like if they could move. A black tarp became a chalkboard, where stick men were drawn as the program developed. The costumes gave the program a 3-D effect, as the uniform backs made it appear as though stick figures were coming to life before our eyes.IPE judges files available on DCE Document Managermessage posted: 10-03-2009 14:55

NorthCoast Academy Percussion Ensemble from Saginaw, Michigan (USA) is proud to announce that they will be traveling to Europe in April of 2009 to represent the U.S. indoor percussion community in both clinics and performances. This incredible opportunity would not be possible without the support of Dynasty USA and Muremo Music in Europe. On the European continent mr Jean Paul Ratajczek from Muremo Music will function as the liaison for their stay and performances in the indoor circuit.
NorthCoast Academy will be performing their 2009 production, "Echo." With music based on Frank Sullivan's piece "Echoes Reflected," Martin Hotte and Nick Pourcho's musical arrangements come to life through "Echo" with Scott Allen's brilliant visual imagery. The show carries the trademarks that NCA and the veteran design team has come to be known by, lots of notes, fast drill, and a few new surprises.
In 2003, NCA won the gold medal in the Independent Open class at WGI's World Championships. This Championship title would bump them up to the Independent World class for the 2004 season. NCA is Michigan's highest-ranked indoor percussion ensemble, and with their energetic and demanding shows, NCA continues their race to the top in the WGI Independent World class.
In addition NorthCoast Academy would like to thank the following sponsors whose continuing support of the NCA organization makes this tour possible: Dynasty Percussion Instruments, Innovative Percussion, Sabian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads and Graphics Mechanics.
The staff and members of NCA are committed to bring the audiences in Europe an incredible experience with both performance and education. NCA is honored to have this opportunity for our staff and members and is incredibly grateful for the generous support from all of our sponsors.

With a program that pushed the boundaries for visual creativity in the activity that earned caption awards for Effect and Visual, Rhythm X
(OH) (Gold Medal- 96.9) took their first WGI PIW Championship with “Gone”. With a reddish-orange autumn leaf camouflage pattern on tarp, backdrops, and costumes, the line almost disappeared from view when their backs were to the audience, making them literally appear to be “gone”.
Riverside Community College
(CA) (Silver Medal- 95.8) took the spectators on a journey to 1920’s-era Paris as seen through the eyes of an American traveler with “City of Lights”. Aimachi
(Japan) (Bronze Medal- 94.85), always a fan favorite, once again won our hearts with “Drum Roll”. The line brought along their IW medalist guard, who in addition to flags, rifles, sabers, and batons, also utilized snare drums as equipment, tossing them high up in the air.
IPE Guests Matrix
(OH) (9th- 89.7) began their program “Beats” with the most fundamental pulse of all- the human heartbeat. A big booming introduction certainly got heart rates raised as the music book took the ensemble through a number of varied styles. Some of the finest musical moments of the evening occurred during sensitively played rubato passages in a gorgeous softer section where a discernible beat was absent.

Taking us from an ancient Roman coliseum to modern day urban America, Dartmouth
(MA) (Gold Medal- 96.75) captured the PSW title on the strength of high Effect and Visual scores with “Mightier Than The Sword”. Starting with the battery as combatants in the arena, the line continued their tradition of solid drumming with demanding parts from all sections which were executed with ease.
Demonstrating the ultimate futility of violence and war, defending PSW Champion Mission Viejo
(CA) (Silver Medal- 95.75) presented “Walking In Your Footsteps”. In the beginning we heard ethereal angelic sounds as though one were present at the dawn of creation. However, the mood quickly darkened into an avalanche of aggression and rage as mankind came in conflict with itself, with drums pounding out angry outbursts when the tempo quickened.
(CA) (Bronze Medal- 94.7), moving up two places from prelims, treated us to an all-night drumming bash with “From Dusk til Dawn”. Starting with the setting of the sun, the line treated the UD Arena crowd to a spectacular percussive serenade.
IPE Guests Father Ryan
(TN) (14th- 87.0) continued their tradition as clown princes of WGI with the uproarious “Seven Countries in Seven Minutes”. A hapless American tourist boarded a plane and had a series of misadventures in foreign lands. After being pounced on by a large sumo wrestler in Japan to being chased by a bull in Spain, the man was happy to finally touch the ground in the US of A, as he was greeted by this year’s Presidential candidates and the Pope.

The audience loved the performances, including Swiss Superdrumline Top Secret, 15 competing units and the Amplification Clinic by Rob Ferguson (in front of a full house!). It was GREAT!
For the first time in history, two WGI Indoor Percussion Ensembles were performing at one event! Father Ryan High School Winter Drumline showed the audience what a young (max. 17 years old) and talented group can do! With Japanese sumo wrestlers, Irish Leprechauns, African tribals, bicycles and a Spanish (bull)fighter they got the crowed on their feet! (Twice!). Indoor Percussion Ensemble Matrix is from another planet. With their energy, their pace, their technique and their "Beats", they blew the audience away with top notch performances!
IPE would like to thank:
All competing units
Top Secret, Matrix and Father Ryan HS
Our Sponsors: Dynasty, InCorps, Muremo and Corps & Band

The IPE Championships are going to be a mega percussion event! 515 tickets are allready sold and no less than 16 units from 6 different countries will perform on Sunday March 30th in Wevelgem, Belgium.
Besides the Championships IPE is proud to present a very unique amplification clinic. Dynasty USA Educational Endorser Rob Ferguson (The Glassmen/Matrix) will be doing this clinic entitled "Amplifying the Front Ensemble: How to and How Much?".
Rob will be focusing on the growing situation of amplification. Indoor drumlines, Marching Bands, and Drum corps are using amplification to boost their front ensemble sound. This presents many problems for the educator and Rob will help everyone figure out what would be best for all situations. Rob will also be going through the new Dynasty USA amplification equipment which includes powered PA speakers, Sub woofers, two different types of mixing boards, four microphones designed specifically for the activity, and special microphone clamps that make it easy to set up. The clinic will be held on Sunday March 30th.
Rob Ferguson has been the director of Matrix Indoor Drumline since its conception in 1999 and currently serves as the executive director, as well as the battery coordinator/arranger. Additionally, Ferguson is the front ensemble coordinator for the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps. He is currently serving his sixth term as a percussion representative to the Mid-East Performance Association Board of Directors.
The clinic is part of the IPE Championships and can only be entered with a IPE Championships ticket. Indoor Percussion Europe (IPE) has changed the date and location of the 2008 IPE Championships. The organisation has decided that the new date will be Sunday, March 30th, 2008 in “De Schelp” in Wevelgem, Belgium.
“Sunday March 30th will be better in every way”, Erwin van Gemert of IPE says. “Our main reason to change the date is because of the new arrival times of our American guests. With this new date we can really build an indoor percussion event which will be much better and bigger. Fans can already start looking forward to this super weekend because they don’t have two big events on one day anymore and IPE offers them a chance to experience the world’s best indoor percussion units in Belgium!”.
“Because of the changing of the date we also had to change to location. De Schelp in Wevelgem is a fantastic indoor facility which is perfect for showcasing the exhilarating performances of the world’s most elite and exclusive indoor percussion ensembles in Europe”.

The Top Secret Drum Corps (Switzerland), Percussion Ensemble DrumSpirit (Belgium) and Edelweiss (France) will perform at the 2008 IPE Championships. Together with WGI indoor percussion units Matrix and Father Ryan (USA) they are the first units that have registered for the competition run by Indoor Percussion Europe.
Top Secret Drum Corps are the real deal in Percussion and pretty special. The whole show is very creative and some of the patterns (rhythmically and physically) are outstanding. You can find a lot of movie clips on YouTube to check them out.
The triple DCE European Percussion Champion DrumSpirit are the first Belgian competitor to register the European percussion event. The Belgians took the gold medal for the third consecutive year at the DCE Championships last september in Rotterdam and are very consistent in achieving the highest level of indoor percussion.
Making their debut in the European indoor percussion competition, Edelweiss from France will be performing in the Concert Class. They are the first French unit in Indoor Percussion Europe. Indoor Percussion Europe is a new European based youth organisation, that is started by a group of percussion instructors, arrangers, judges and educators who are concerned about the level of percussion training and performance, primarily in Belgium, France, the UK and The Netherlands. We believe that Indoor Percussion isn't just about organising indoor percussion events, our goal is to encourage indoor percussion units to perform and entertain at our events that really fit their specific needs and demands. After DCE decided to stop the Percussion Class competition we think that the indoor percussion activities deserve a competition which is focused on Indoor Percussion and nothing else.
IPE is the governing body of the indoor percussion activity in Europe and will host a series of indoor percussion events, educational clinics and the IPE Championships during the winter and spring months. Our educational clinics are in conjunction with InCorps
. These programs provide a motivational tool that can help turn non-percussionists and a typical drum section into a cohesive and entertaining percussion ensemble. Top percussion judges from the US and Europe will adjudicate all of our future events.
Our first major event will be the European Indoor Percussion Championships on Sunday March 30, 2008 in Wevelgem, Belgium. Together with Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble MATRIX (USA) and Father Ryan High School Winter Drumline (USA) we will present a day packed with Indoor Percussion and so much more! Matrix is proud to announce that they will be traveling to Europe in March of 2008 to represent the U.S. indoor percussion community in both clinics and performances. This incredible opportunity would not be possible without the support of Dynasty USA and Muremo Music in Europe. On the European continent mr Jean Paul Ratajczek from Muremo Music will function as the liaison for their stay and performances in the indoor circuit.
In addition Matrix would like to thank the following sponsors whose continuing support of the Matrix organization makes this tour possible: Innovative Percussion, Sabian, Remo, M & I Dancewear, and The Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps.
The staff and members of Matrix are committed to bring the audiences in Europe an incredible experience with both performance and education. Matrix is honored to have this opportunity for our staff and members and is incredibly grateful for the generous support from all of our sponsors.
